"Bridging the Gap Between Traditional & Realism"
Saturday November 21st, 2009 2:00pm
Cost: $120 Course Length: 2 hours
Russ Abbott learned most of what he knows about art through the eyes of a tattooer. Prior to his tattooing apprenticeship, he knew he could draw, but he never had much formal art training to help him develop a style. With over 10 years as a custom tattoo artistunder his belt, Abbott has attempted just about every tattooing style & technique with varying degrees of success. His mantra all along was to learn from his mistakes and repeat his successes. Over time, Abbott's work has evolved into a realm all its own. Drawing from solid foundations in both traditional and realistic tattooing, he's been making a name for himself with his uniquely American brand of illustrative tattooing.
Abbott's tattoo creations are often strikingly vivid depictions of dramatic scenery. Even the most mundane objects seem to have a life all their own when Russ works his magic on them. The staples of his tattoo style include clean line work, dynamic composition, dramatic lighting, and realistic rendering. Many of the epic scenes depicted in his tattoo projects seem to spring to life from the pages of a classic novel.
During this seminar, Russ Abbott dives deep into his creative process, revealing hard-learned wisdom and offering useful advice for those wishing to take their work to the next level. Following is an overview of what will be covered. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Consultation & Design: Learn techniques for molding your clients' concepts into the best tattoo ideas with a behind-the-scenes look into the planning process for large-scale tattoo projects.
Tattooing Techniques: Includes discussion on the techniques that Russ uses for stenciling & drawing directly on the skin, outlining & mapping out the piece, smooth shading & solid coloring, and getting that "clean" look. Find out what needles, machines, and inks Russ prefers. Every attendee will receive a secret list detailing which machines, needles, and inks Russ prefers as well as his unique color recipes and how to use them.
Style: Throughout the seminar, Russ will focus on how he uses illustrative elements like texture, lighting, shadow, and perspective to achieve clarity in complex compositions. Examples from Russ Abbott's own portfolio will be examined to show how he applies the fundamentals of traditional tattooing to realistic subjects.
Seating is limited. Attendees are encouraged to pre-register by clicking the link below.

Ron570 began tattooing in 2000 and opened the doors of 5-7-0 Tattooing Co. in October of 2005. Over the course of his career, he has become well versed in many styles of tattooing, but about 2 years ago found his niche in realism. Through a process of trial and error, Ron has evolved his unique style which is easily identified in the visibly striking portraits he creates. The dark imagery Ron brings to life on his clients is vivid to the point of being startling. With a flair for subtly highlighting the most minute details, Ron’s monsters look like they could quite literally rip out of the flesh they’re sitting on and right into yours.
giving examples of neuma vs. coil machines as well as pigment mixology. Ron will also invite you to step into his dark world as he demonstrates the execution of a horror realism piece. Check out Ron570’s gallery at www.myspace.com/ron570
